About Table Linens
Set a Table That Invites People to Linger
Table linens make the difference between putting food on a table and setting one. A runner and a set of placemats protect the surface, soften the clatter of plates and signal that a meal is worth sitting down for. Our range includes jute and burlap runners in several lengths, including a long roll you can cut to size, linen and cotton linen runners with tassels, jacquard and holiday designs, a waterproof cotton linen runner, gauze cheesecloth runners for events, metallic gold runners, and placemats in braided, woven vinyl, rattan and metallic leaf styles.
Sizing Runners and Placemats
- Runner length: For a draped look, choose a runner that overhangs each end of the table by 6 to 12 inches. For a tailored look, stop it a few inches short of the edges.
- Runner width: A runner about a third as wide as the table leaves room for plates on either side.
- Spacing placemats: Allow about 24 inches of table edge for each seat so placemats and elbows do not overlap.
- Material for the meal: Woven vinyl placemats and waterproof runners wipe clean after weeknight dinners. Jute, burlap and rattan add rustic texture, and cheesecloth gauze drapes beautifully for parties and weddings.
Styling tip: For a celebration, gather a long cheesecloth runner loosely down the center of the table so it ripples, let the ends spill toward the floor, and line it with taper candles and small bud vases. Afterward, fold the gauze loosely and store it flat so deep creases do not set before the next party.
Complete the centerpiece with tapers and votives from our candle holders collection, then add a few stems in a bud vase from our vase collection.
Common Questions About Table Linens
Measure the table length and add 12 to 24 inches so each end hangs down 6 to 12 inches. For a runner that sits entirely on top, subtract a few inches instead.
They are best spot cleaned with a damp cloth and shaken out or vacuumed gently. Soaking can loosen the weave and change the shape. Expect a little fiber shedding the first few times you use them.
Both work together, with the runner dressing the center while placemats protect each seat. On a small table, a runner laid across the width instead of the length can double as two facing placemats.
Iron it slightly damp on the reverse, following the care notes for the fabric. If you would rather not iron, hang the cloth over a shower rail while you run a hot shower, then lay it flat on the table while it is still a little warm.
