About Outdoor Up & Down Wall Lights

Twin Beams That Draw Crisp Lines on Your Walls

Up and down lights send one beam toward the eaves and another toward the ground, painting two clean shafts of light on the wall. The look is graphic and modern, and it suits stucco, fiber cement, brick and painted siding equally well. The fixture lights the entry, while the beams give the whole facade shape after dark. Our range includes cylinders, squares, globes and slim half rounds in black, white and sand gray cast aluminum, plus wave designs with two to ten light points and solar versions for walls without wiring. One adjustable design also comes with an optional motion sensor.

What to Look For

  • Beam shape: Symmetrical models throw matching beams up and down. Asymmetrical and adjustable designs let you vary the pattern, which helps when a window or soffit is in the way.
  • Number of lights: Single and double light fixtures suit doors and garages, while wave designs with four to ten points create a decorative pattern on a bare wall.
  • Clearance: The upward beam needs open wall above it. Under a low porch ceiling much of that light is lost, so a downlight may be the better choice there.
  • Color temperature: Many designs come in white and warm white. Pick one and use it across the whole house.

Placement tip: Flank the garage door with a pair, then add one more at the same height between the garage and the front door. Three evenly lit columns tie the front of the house together.

Want an even wash instead of defined beams? See wall washer lights. For more decorative styles, browse outdoor wall sconces.

Common Questions About Outdoor Up & Down Wall Lights

On a garage, one on each side of the door is standard. Along a longer wall, spacing them 8 to 10 feet apart creates a steady rhythm of light columns without gaps that look accidental. Keep them all at the same height.

They can, but the upward beam will hit the porch ceiling and spread out instead of drawing a line. If you want the graphic effect, mount them on walls with open space above, and use a downlight or glass sconce under the porch roof.

They light the wall and the ground directly below, which is enough to see an entry clearly. For wide areas like a driveway, add a flood light or a motion sensor light alongside them.
