Getting the vanity light right

For a fixture above the mirror, about 75 to 80 inches from the floor is typical, which usually lands just above the top of the mirror. Side sconces work best with their center near eye level, roughly 60 to 66 inches from the floor, on either side of the mirror.
Neutral white, around 3000K to 4000K, gives the most accurate read of skin tones. Very warm light can hide redness and very cool light can look harsh. A mirror with adjustable color modes lets you check your look under warm, neutral and daylight tones.
Not every fixture suits a humid room. Near a shower or tub, choose a fixture described as waterproof or damp rated, and keep it out of direct water spray. Over a vanity away from the shower, most wall lights and mirror lights work well.
Only a fixture rated for a wet location, and the wiring must suit that position. A damp rated fixture is fine elsewhere in the room but not in the spray zone. Have a licensed electrician confirm what is suitable above a shower or tub.
