Crystal Chandeliers: Choosing Brilliance That Fits Your Room

Who This Is For: Anyone choosing a crystal chandelier for a dining room, foyer, stairwell or living room who wants the sparkle without the guesswork over size, weight and hanging height.

Key Takeaways

The Short Answer

Pick the room first, then the shape. A tall, tapering crystal chandelier belongs in a double height foyer, a drum or ring in a dining room, and a candle form in a formal, romantic space.

Crystal does one thing better than any other material. It turns a single source of light into hundreds of small ones, and it throws them across walls, ceilings and faces. In the evening, a room with a good crystal chandelier feels lit from within. The choice comes down to scale, weight and the way you want the room to feel at dusk.

Four Characters of Crystal

The cascade for tall rooms

The Gloria is a gold finished metal frame strung with cut crystal beads and strands, falling in tiers like a gown. It is made for double height foyers and stairwells. Choose 23.6 inches wide by 47.2 inches high (60 by 120 cm), or 31.5 inches wide by 59.1 inches high (80 by 150 cm). Those heights are the fixture body, and the suspension adds to it.

The French drum for gracious rooms

The Fontaine is crystal on a gold metal frame, and it is crystal, not acrylic. It is offered round at 23.62 and 31.5 inches (60 and 80 cm), and long at 39.4 and 47.2 inches (100 and 120 cm) for a stair run or a generous table. It is 16.93 inches (43 cm) high.

For a slimmer, gold toned alternative, the Viennese is crystal on a gold carbon steel frame. It comes in four diameters, 21.65, 25.59, 33.5 and 37.4 inches (55, 65, 85 and 95 cm). The smallest is 13.78 inches (35 cm) high.

The slim, modern drum

The Nordique is the lightest of the group, about 15 lb (7 kg). It is gold carbon steel with crystal, round at 19.69, 23.6 or 31.5 inches (50, 60 or 80 cm), and the smallest is only 7.87 inches (20 cm) high. Long and two tier versions are offered too. It suits lower ceilings that still deserve sparkle.

The candle form for formal rooms

The Eugenie is a tiered candle chandelier with cut glass arms and candle sleeves on a metal frame. The glass is offered in white, black, amber, cognac and smoke gray. Choose 8 lights at 28.3 inches wide by 23.6 inches high (72 by 60 cm), or 10 lights at 33.5 by 26.8 inches (85 by 68 cm). Warm white E14 LED candle bulbs are included, and it hangs on an adjustable chain.

Size It to the Room

In an open room, add the length and the width in feet and read the total as inches. A 14 by 18 foot living room points to a chandelier around 32 inches (81 cm) across. Over a dining table, choose a diameter about half to two thirds of the table width.

Crystal chandeliers can take a little more scale than plainer fixtures, because the light moves through them. If you are between two sizes, we suggest the larger. For a stairwell, think in height instead of width. The Elica spirals crystal down a full drop, from 3 lights to 36. The 7 light version is 15.75 inches wide by 70.87 inches high (40 by 180 cm), and the 14 light is 23.62 inches wide by 98.43 inches high (60 by 250 cm).

Crystal Room by Room

Dining room

This is where crystal does its best work, because candlelit faces and polished glass reflect it back. Hang a round or long form centred over the table, and keep it low enough to feel intimate without blocking sightlines across the table. The Viennese and the Eugenie are natural choices.

Foyer and stairwell

Go tall and let the fixture be seen from several levels. The Gloria and the Elica both work with height rather than against it. Measure from the floor to the ceiling, then decide how much of the drop you want to see from the landing.

Living room

Choose a drum such as the Fontaine or the Nordique and hang it over the seating group. Pair it with softer lamps at sofa height, so that the chandelier is the sparkle and the lamps are the warmth.

Bedroom

A smaller crystal fixture over the foot of the bed, or in a dressing area, feels intimate and unexpected. Keep the diameter modest, and always put it on a dimmer.

What Good Crystal Looks Like

Look for cut crystal, with clean edges that catch light. It should feel substantial and sparkle in small, sharp points, not a soft glow. Because our crystal is cut and strung by hand, small differences in clarity and in the fall of each strand are normal, and part of the character of the piece.

Finish matters as much as the crystal. Gold warms the light and suits cream, taupe and deep brown rooms. For a cooler, cleaner look, ask our team about the other finishes available on a specific model.

Light colour is the last detail. Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, flatters skin, wine and linen. Whatever you choose, plan a dimmer. Crystal glows at low levels in a way that no other material can match.

Hanging Height and Weight

Over a dining table, hang the lowest crystal 30 to 34 inches (76 to 86 cm) above the surface. Over open floor, such as a foyer or living room, keep the lowest point at least 7 feet (213 cm) up. In a stairwell, set it so it clears the stair and lands within sight from both the door and the landing.

Crystal is heavy, and weight changes how it is installed. The Fontaine is nearly 42 lb (19 kg). The Nordique is about 15 lb (7 kg). Ask a licensed electrician to confirm that the ceiling box and joists will carry the load. The weight of a chandelier is not a place for compromise.

Care and Cleaning

Switch the fixture off and let it cool. Wipe each crystal with a soft, lint free cloth, and avoid harsh sprays that can cloud the surface. A light dusting every few weeks keeps the sparkle high, and a gentle clean twice a year restores it fully.

Is It Right for Your Space?

A crystal chandelier suits you if you want a room to feel warm, generous and a little theatrical after dark. It is less suited to a very minimal room, where a slim ring or a linear pendant may feel more at home.
