About Patio & Deck
Make the Patio and Deck Glow After Sunset
A patio or deck only earns its keep after dark if you can see the table, the steps and the edge of the boards. This edit brings together the lights that make outdoor evenings comfortable: globe and festoon string lights, fairy and curtain lights, outdoor LED rope and strip lights, solar and rechargeable lanterns, pillar and post lights for railings, and step and deck lights for stairs. Many run on solar or USB power, so you can light a rented patio or a far corner of the yard without new wiring.
Layer the Light in Three Steps
- Start with safety: Light every step and any change in level first. Step and deck lights on each riser, or motion sensor stair strips, prevent trips without flooding the whole deck.
- Add an overhead glow: String lights hung in a zigzag or around the perimeter give soft light over dining and seating. Plan hanging points about 7 to 9 feet high so tall guests clear the strands, and let each run sag slightly for a relaxed look.
- Finish at table height: Lanterns on a table, a railing post or a hook put light where people actually sit, and portable ones can follow you to the fire pit.
Power, Weather and Comfort
Solar strings and lanterns are the easiest to set up, but the panel needs a sunny spot, so a shaded pergola is a better fit for plug in or rechargeable models. Check each listing for its weather details and keep plug connections under cover. Warm white light around 2700K is kinder to faces and food than cool white, and it tends to draw fewer insects. Several string and fairy lights also offer a remote, app control or color changing modes, which is fun for parties and easy to set back to warm white for everyday use. Softer, lower light also keeps the stars visible and the neighbors happy.

Common Questions About Patio & Deck
Short spans of 10 to 15 feet can usually hang on their own between two anchor points. For longer runs, stretch a guide wire between the anchors and clip the strand to it so the bulbs are not carrying the load. Measure the full route, including the drop to the outlet, before you buy.
For ambience, yes. Solar strings and lanterns give a soft glow that suits dining and conversation, and they shine longer after a full day of sun on the panel. For steps and stairs, pair them with dedicated step lights so the safety lighting does not depend on the weather.
Warm white is the usual choice because it flatters skin tones, food and wood decking, and it tends to attract fewer bugs than cool white. Keep one color across string lights, lanterns and step lights so the whole space looks planned, and save color changing modes for parties.
Aim light down and inward toward your own seating, and choose shaded or diffused fixtures over bare bulbs at the edge of the property. Warm light and a dimmer setting after dark carry far less than bright cool light.
