Why you'll love it

Clean beams along the fence line

These small blocks turn a plain fence or side wall into a pattern of light. Each one sends a neat beam down the wall, or a matching pair up and down, so a row of them draws clean cones of warm light along the surface. In daylight they look like quiet gray black details.

Choose Down Only for a single beam toward the ground, or Up and Down for a taller block with a beam at each end. The light is warm white. Each block is hardwired to a junction box, which makes them easy to repeat along a fence, a garden wall or a porch.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Compact Block Porch Light, Gray Black Die Cast Aluminum Sconce Such a Good Outdoor Wall Sconce

Not every wall needs a big fixture. Fences, side walls and porch columns often look best with small, repeated points of light that draw a pattern on the surface and let the architecture do the talking.

The Compact Block Porch Light is a small gray black block of die cast aluminum with a glass lens and a silicone seal. A warm white 3000K COB LED sends a focused beam onto the wall. Choose Down Only, 3.8 inches tall and 3.4 inches wide and deep with a 4W LED, or Up and Down, 6.7 inches tall and 3.8 inches wide and deep with two 4W LEDs. Both sit on a base plate 3.1 inches tall. It is hardwired, 110V to 220V, and rated IP65.

What makes the compact block stand out

The beams are the point. Light leaves through a glass lens at one or both ends, so instead of a glowing box you see neat cones of light on the wall. A row of them turns a fence into a rhythm of light.

The two versions give two looks. Down Only puts a single pool of light toward the ground, good for steps and paths. Up and Down draws matching cones above and below, a more architectural look that makes a plain wall feel designed.

The build is sealed and solid. Die cast aluminum, a glass lens and a silicone ring keep rain and dust out, and the IP65 rating means it can sit on an open wall.

The small size makes it flexible. It fits on a porch column, a narrow strip of wall between windows, or a fence post where a lantern would never fit.

Warm white 3000K light keeps the mood soft, flattering white siding, dark fences and planting alike.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Fences. A row of blocks draws a pattern of beams along the fence line.
  • Porch columns. One block per column gives a neat, repeated glow.
  • Beside the front door. A pair of up and down blocks frames the entry.
  • Garage walls. Blocks between the doors mark the drive.
  • Garden walls. Down Only blocks light the planting at the base of the wall.

It suits modern farmhouse, contemporary and minimalist homes, and the small size fits smaller porches well.

Choosing the size and placement

Down Only is the smaller block at 3.8 inches tall, best for lighting steps, paths and planting below. Up and Down is 6.7 inches tall and casts beams in both directions, best for framing doors and making a wall the feature.

Because each block is an accent light, plan them as a set: several along a fence or wall, or a pair either side of a door.

A few guidelines help:

  • Space blocks evenly so the cones of light repeat neatly.
  • Mount a row at the same height for a clean line.
  • Use Up and Down beside doors and Down Only along paths.
  • Plan the wiring with an electrician before the fence or wall is finished.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included, and each block mounts to its own junction box or wiring run.

Layering it with other lighting

Small beam lights are the rhythm layer of outdoor lighting. Browse the up and down wall lights collection for larger fixtures in the same spirit, and add path lights along the walk for light at ground level.

Keep the light color the same across every block and every other fixture on the facade. Warm white everywhere reads as one calm scene.

Let the wall surface help. Beams look strongest on smooth render, painted siding and dark fences, where the edges of the light cones stay crisp.

Looking after it is easy. Switch it off and let it cool, wipe the aluminum with a soft, dry cloth and dry it fully, and clean the glass lens with glass cleaner on the cloth, never sprayed on the fixture.

Is the compact block right for your space?

This light is a strong fit if you:

  • Want small, repeated beams of light on a fence or wall.
  • Need a fixture small enough for a porch column or narrow strip of wall.
  • Like a choice of down only or up and down light.
  • Prefer warm white light and a sealed aluminum body.

It may not suit someone who wants one bright fixture to light a whole yard, since each block is a gentle accent light.

Frequently asked questions

What is it made of?

Die cast aluminum in gray black, with a glass lens and a silicone sealing ring.

What color is the light?

Warm white 3000K from a built in COB LED.

How much light does it give?

Down Only has one 4W LED and Up and Down has two. Each lights about 32 to 54 sq ft, so it works best as an accent.

Is it hardwired?

Yes. It runs on 110V to 220V from a wall switch, and a licensed electrician should install it.

How many should I use?

Use a pair beside a door, or a row spaced evenly along a fence or wall.

Where should the down only version go?

Along paths, steps and planting beds, where a single pool of light below is most useful.

Can it go on an open fence?

Yes. It is rated IP65 for rain and dust, so it can go on an open fence or wall.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let it cool, wipe the aluminum with a dry cloth, and clean the lens with glass cleaner on the cloth.
