Curtains That Control Light and Frame the View
Curtains decide how a room feels at every hour: bright and airy at noon, private at dusk, dark enough to sleep past sunrise. They also soften hard walls and make windows look larger than they are. Measuring for Curtains That Fit
- Rod height: Mount the rod 4 to 6 inches above the window frame, or halfway to the ceiling, to make the window look taller.
- Rod width and fullness: Extend the rod 3 to 6 inches past each side of the frame so open panels clear the glass. For a full look, total panel width should be about twice the window width.
- Length: Panels that just graze the floor look tailored. Let them pool an inch or two for a softer, formal feel, or stop at the sill over a radiator or kitchen counter.
- Fabric and function: Blackout panels suit bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, sheers give daytime privacy while letting light through, and thermal linings can help with drafty windows.
Styling tip: Layer a sheer behind a blackout panel on a double rod. Keep the sheer closed during the day for soft light and privacy, then draw the blackout at night. Tiebacks placed about a third of the way up from the floor hold open panels neatly and let the most daylight reach the room.
Carry the color across the room with pillows and throws from soft furnishings.

The fabric blocks most light, but some usually creeps in around the edges. Mounting the rod higher and wider than the frame, or using a rod that wraps back to the wall, closes those gaps.
The header is the top of the panel and decides how it hangs. Grommets slide along a rod, hooks and pleats clip to rings or a track, S fold panels form even waves, and hook and loop tops attach without a rod at all.
