Pendant Lights for Islands, Tables and Bedsides
A pendant puts light exactly where you need it, hanging on a cord or rod over a kitchen island, a dining table, a reading corner or either side of the bed. The range here is broad: clear and colored glass, travertine and cream stone, woven rattan and hand knitted bamboo, hemp rope, paper cloud shades and oversized wabi sabi domes, plus slim linear LED bars for longer islands. Most come in black, white, gold or natural textures, which makes them easy to pair with existing hardware.
Hanging pendants the right way
- Height over counters: Hang the bottom of the shade about 30 to 36 inches above an island or table so it lights the surface without blocking the view across the room.
- How many: Two larger pendants suit a short island, and three smaller ones usually suit a longer run. Leave around 24 to 30 inches between them.
- Shade material and glare: Clear glass throws bright, sparkly light but can show the bulb. Opal glass, stone, paper and woven shades soften the glow for a calmer look.
- Bulb color: Warm white around 2700K to 3000K flatters food and wood. Choose dimmable bulbs if the pendant hangs over a dining table.
Styling tip: Swap bedside lamps for a pair of pendants. Hang them low enough to light the nightstand but high enough to clear your head when you sit up, and the nightstand surface stays free.

Common Questions About Pendants
It depends on the island's length and the size of the shades. As a starting point, islands under about 6 feet often look balanced with two pendants, while longer islands take three. Keep the end pendants roughly 6 inches or more in from the island's edges.
Yes, if it hangs over furniture rather than a walkway. Nobody walks under a table or beside a bed, so a lower drop is fine there. In open floor areas, keep about 7 feet of clearance or choose a flush mount instead.
