About Picture Lights

Picture Lights That Let Your Art Take Center Stage

A picture light hangs above a painting, print, mirror or bookshelf and throws a gentle wash down its face. It turns a framed piece into a focal point after dark and adds a warm layer of light to a living room or hallway. Many of the designs here are cordless: rechargeable and battery operated bars with remote control and dimming, so you can hang them over art on any wall without wiring. There are also long linear bars in lengths from about 2 feet to more than 6 feet, magnetic spot heads, glass globes and gold, black, silver and chrome finishes.

Lighting art well

  • Length to frame: A light about half to two thirds the width of the frame usually covers the piece evenly without overpowering it.
  • Mounting height: Fix the light just above the top of the frame and angle the arm so the beam reaches the middle and lower edge, not only the top.
  • Warm color: Warm white around 2700K to 3000K flatters oil paintings, wood frames and warm toned prints.
  • Glare on glass: For prints behind glass, tilt the head so reflections point toward the floor rather than into the viewer's eyes. Matte or museum glass also cuts reflections if you are reframing.

Placement tip: Try a picture light over open bookshelves or a framed mirror in an entry. The narrow beam picks out spines, objects or the frame's detail and reads as a soft, collected glow.

Our guide on how to light artwork with picture lights goes step by step, and wall decor has pieces worth lighting.

Common Questions About Picture Lights

Rechargeable models charge through a cable, and battery operated ones take replaceable batteries. Running them at a lower brightness stretches the time between charges, and the listing shows what each model uses.

LED picture lights are a gentle choice, since they run cool and give off very little ultraviolet light. Keep the brightness modest and avoid leaving valuable originals under strong light all day.

Several models here include a remote for switching and dimming, which helps when the light sits high above a mantel. The listing states whether a remote is part of the package.
