Choosing the Right Wall Clock
- Size for the distance: An 8 to 10 inch face is easy to read in a small kitchen or bedroom. Across a living room, 14 to 16 inches or a large open metal design reads more clearly.
- Movement: Most analog clocks here run on quartz. If you are a light sleeper, look for a silent or sweep movement in the listing rather than a ticking one.
- Analog or digital: Digital faces are quick to read at night and add extras like the date. In a bedroom, check whether the display brightness can be lowered.
- Mounting: A single screw with a sturdy head carries most light clocks. Metal and porcelain designs deserve a wall anchor.
Placement tip: A double sided station clock mounts on a bracket that sticks out from the wall, so it can be read from both ends of a hallway or from the kitchen and the dining area at once.

Common Questions About Wall Clocks
Think about where you will read it from. For a desk or a small kitchen, a face around 8 to 12 inches is plenty. For a large living room wall or a tall ceiling, go bigger, around 15 inches or more, so it holds its own visually.
Not all of them. Standard quartz movements tick once per second, while silent or sweep movements glide and make almost no sound. Check the listing before hanging one in a bedroom or nursery.
Above a doorway or on a wall you face while cooking both work well. Keep it away from the stove, the kettle and the dishwasher vent, since heat and steam can shorten the life of the movement and fog a glass face.
Hang it lower than a standard clock, close to the child's eye level when seated, so they can study the hands without craning. Raise it as they grow.
