Choosing Pots and Greenery
- Drainage matters: Pots with a hole and saucer protect roots from sitting in water. A pot without a hole works best as a cover for a plastic nursery pot you lift out to water.
- Size up gradually: When repotting, choose a pot about 1 to 2 inches wider than the current root ball. Too much extra soil stays wet and invites rot.
- Terracotta or glazed: Unglazed terracotta breathes and dries out faster, which suits succulents and cactus. Glazed ceramic holds moisture longer, which ferns and tropical plants appreciate.
- Faux where light is scarce: Artificial palms, vines and moss fill windowless bathrooms, high shelves and dark corners. A soft brush or a hair dryer on the cool setting clears dust.
Placement tip: Anchor the corner beside a sofa with a tall artificial palm, then echo its green with a row of small succulents on the nearest windowsill. One large plant and a few small ones look fuller than many medium ones.

For most living plants, yes, or water pools at the bottom and roots rot. If you love a pot without a hole, keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot inside it and empty any water that collects after watering.
A shallow, unglazed terracotta pot with a drainage hole is ideal, because it dries out quickly between waterings. Fill it with a gritty cactus mix rather than regular potting soil.
Dust them every few weeks, bend the stems into natural angles and mix them with a real plant or two nearby. Faux foliage in strong direct sun may fade over time, so a spot with bright but indirect light is kinder.
