Choosing the length and placement

The three lengths pair with three outputs: about 15.7 inches at 9W, 21.7 inches at 12W and 27.6 inches at 18W. Measure the artwork or mirror first and choose a length shorter than the piece is wide, so the light does not overhang the edges. A light slightly narrower than the frame looks deliberate; one wider than the frame looks like an afterthought.

• Mount the light centered above the piece, close enough that the light reaches the bottom edge.
• Tilt the head down until the light falls on the surface rather than into the room, which is the step most people skip.
• For a mirror, center the light over the mirror and angle it so it lights your face, not the glass.
• For a gallery wall, use the same length and finish over each frame so the row feels planned.

Layering it with other lighting

A picture light is accent lighting. It draws the eye to one spot, which works best when the rest of the room is a little softer. In a living room, let a ceiling light or a pair of lamps provide the general glow, then switch on the picture light in the evening so the artwork becomes the focus. In a bathroom, pair it with a ceiling light so the room is bright while the mirror light handles the face.
