About Linear Suspension

One Long Line of Light Over the Table

A linear suspension is a single long fixture hung on cables, spreading light evenly along a dining table, kitchen island, desk run or conference table. It does the job of two or three pendants with one clean shape and one electrical box. Our current designs are sculptural takes on the idea: aluminum LED bars formed into a gentle wave, in widths of roughly 39 and 47 inches, with black, gold and chrome finishes and choices of warm light, white light or dimming. They suit modern kitchens, dining rooms and home offices where a row of separate shades would feel busy.

Sizing and hanging a linear fixture

  • Length to table: A common guide is a fixture about two thirds the length of the table or island, which keeps light even without overhanging the ends.
  • Height: Hang the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the surface, staying near the upper end of that range on taller ceilings.
  • Alignment: The fixture should run along the table's long axis and sit centered over it. If the existing ceiling box is off center, have an electrician move it before installing.
  • Dimming: Pick a dimmable or step dimming option if the table is used for both homework and dinner.

Styling tip: Over a rectangular table, a wave shaped fixture adds movement that a straight bar lacks. Keep the chairs and table simple so the curve becomes the focal point.

For more hanging options, browse pendants, or read how high to hang a chandelier over a dining table, which applies to linear fixtures too.

Common Questions About Linear Suspension

Aim for about two thirds of the table's length. A table around 5 feet long pairs well with the 39 inch width, and a table near 6 feet suits the 47 inch width.

Yes. It spreads light along a long desk or a pair of desks and reduces the shadows a single overhead point creates. Hang it a little higher than you would over a dining table so it stays out of your sightline when you look up from the screen.

It mounts to a standard ceiling junction box like most hanging lights. Because it is long, the box needs to sit where the center of the fixture should be, and a licensed electrician should do the wiring.
