What Matters on Stairs and Decks
- Low and shielded: Choose fixtures that aim light down and across the tread. Glare at eye level can make a staircase harder to read, not easier.
- Recessed or surface: Recessed lights look cleanest but need a cutout in the riser or wall. Surface mounted and solar deck lights install with a few screws.
- Motion options: Sensor kits switch on when someone reaches the bottom step and turn off after a set delay, which suits side stairs and basement entries.
- Color and finish: Warm white suits wood decking, and neutral white pairs well with gray composite and stone. Stainless steel and black or gray aluminum finishes blend into most deck designs.
Placement tip: On a long flight, light every second or third riser rather than every one. The steps stay readable, the effect stays calm, and you need fewer fixtures to do it.

Common Questions About Step & Deck Lights
Most go in the riser, the vertical face of each step, or in the side wall beside the stairs a short distance above the tread. Both positions throw light across the walking surface. Only put a light in the tread itself if it is designed to be walked on, like our inground marker lights.
Only if the solar panel gets several hours of direct sun. Under a roof or pergola the panel stays in shade and the light will run briefly or not at all. For covered areas, a wired or rechargeable option is a better fit.
For marking treads, yes. A strip under each nosing or along the stringer gives an even line that makes every edge easy to see. Strips are not meant to light the whole stairwell, so pair them with a wall light if you also need general lighting.
