Sizing and Setup
- Measure the post: A nominal 4x4 wood post measures about 3.5 inches square. Check the cap's base size against your post so it sits flush and secure.
- Solar caps: They mount with a few screws, need no wiring and switch on at dusk. Run time depends on how much direct sun the top of the post gets.
- Wired lamp posts: A full height post usually needs a concrete footing and a buried cable, so bring in a licensed electrician for the connection.
- Heads and spread: Twin and triple head designs spread light in more directions, which helps at a driveway entrance or a corner of the yard.
Placement tip: On a deck, put caps on every other railing post instead of all of them. The rail still reads clearly at night and the effect feels relaxed rather than busy.

Common Questions About Post Lights
Solar caps are made for square wood posts, and several of ours come in more than one base size. Measure the actual top of the post rather than going by the lumber label, and choose the size that matches it.
The post is set in a concrete footing deep enough to keep it upright through wind and frost, with the cable run through conduit to the base. The final electrical connection should be made by a licensed electrician. A solar lamp post skips the cable but still needs a solid footing.
A post light brings light out to where you need it, such as the end of a long walk or the edge of a driveway, far from the house wall. It also gives visitors a clear landmark from the street.
