A bollard is a short freestanding post with a light built into the top or sides. It sits right at the edge of a walk, drive or garden border and lights the ground around it, so the route is clear without flooding the yard. Because the light sits low, bollards brighten the ground without shining into bedroom windows or across the street. Bollards bring a tidy, architectural rhythm to modern and traditional homes alike. Ours range from compact markers under a foot tall to driveway posts over ten feet, in cylinders, squares, louvered stainless steel, open four sided frames, round globes and slim linear shapes.
How to Pick Bollards
- Height: Knee height bollards suit paths and patios. Taller posts give better coverage on long driveways and help drivers see the edge.
- Light pattern: Louvered and hooded tops push light down and out, while open sided and four beam designs throw a pattern across the ground.
- Mounting: Choose a flat base to bolt onto concrete or pavers, or a ground insert for soil and lawn edges.
- Power: Several bollards are offered in both solar and hardwired versions. Wired bollards on a timer or photocell give the steadiest result.
Placement tip: Set bollards a few inches back from the edge of a driveway rather than right on it. Cars and snow shovels are less likely to clip them, and the light still reaches the pavement. In snowy regions, taller bollards also stay visible above drifts along the drive.
