LED wall sconces have their light source built in, so there is no socket to fill and no bulb to hunt for later. That frees designers to make the fixture far slimmer: long line bars, curved arcs, thin goosenecks and flat discs that sit close to the wall. They use little energy and run cooler than incandescent bulbs, which is handy beside a bed or in a child's room. What matters with integrated LEDs

• Color temperature is set at purchase: Choose warm, neutral or cool in the options. Some models offer three color modes you can switch between.
• Dimming: Only models listed as dimmable should go on a wall dimmer. Others may offer touch or step dimming built into the fixture.
• Brightness: Check the wattage options. A higher setting suits hallways and bathrooms, and a lower one suits bedside use.
• Power type: Several are hardwired, some plug in and a few are rechargeable, so match the model to what your wall offers.

Placement tip: Use a low wattage LED sconce as a night path light in the hallway outside bedrooms, mounted a little lower than usual, so late night trips are lit without waking the whole house.
