What makes the spider lamp stand out

The silhouette comes first. The spindly, branching arms have a mid century character, light and graphic against a plain wall. When the lamp is on, the arms and cones cast a distinct shadow pattern that a flat panel light simply cannot produce, which gives a living room wall real personality.

• For a dining table, measure to the center of the table; two head versions light a longer table.
• Check that the arms clear windows, doors and walkways when fully extended.

Except for the plug in option, it is hardwired. Turn the power off at the breaker, fix the plate to the wall, connect the wires and seat the body onto the plate. The mounting plate and screws are included. Bulbs are not included.

Layering it with other lighting

A reaching wall lamp can be both a task light and a feature light. Aimed down, it lights a table or a book; aimed up, it bounces soft light off the ceiling. Pair it with a ceiling light or a floor lamp for general brightness, and let the spider arms add the drama.

Bulb choice finishes the look. Since bulbs are not included, you can pick the tone and style yourself: a warm bulb for a relaxed living room or bedroom, a slightly brighter one where the lamp lights a dining table. Keeping every head on the lamp at the same color makes the arms read as one sculptural piece rather than a cluster of separate lights.

Furniture placement and the lamp work together. Decide where the sofa, bed or table will sit first, then choose the reach and mounting point so the cone heads land naturally above it.

For care, wipe the lamp with a soft, dry cloth once it is cool, and keep it away from prolonged moisture and direct heat.
