A matched pair on either side of a gate or driveway tells visitors they have arrived and gives the whole frontage a finished look. - Height and presence: Larger brick piers can carry a tall globe or lantern; low garden walls and fence posts suit a shorter cube or square cap.
- Power: Hardwired pillar lights need a cable run up through the column, which is easiest during construction. Solar versions are the practical answer for existing masonry.
- Finish: Black is the most versatile; bronze warms up red brick and traditional homes.
Placement tip: If your gate pillars sit near the street, choose a diffused or frosted shade. Drivers and passersby see a soft glow instead of a bright point of glare. Give both pillars the same power source so they switch on together and glow at the same brightness.

Yes. A solar pillar light only needs to be anchored to the cap with masonry screws. A hardwired light needs a cable brought up through or along the column, which is a job for a licensed electrician.
