Uplighting a wall or a tree is one of the fastest ways to make a yard look considered after dark, but a row of fixtures sitting on the ground can clutter the view by day. The Recessed LED Underground Light solves both. The wattage runs from 1W to 18W, and the size grows with it: the 1W is 1.65 inches across with a 1.5 inch hole, the 5W and 6W are 3.94 inches across, and the 18W is 7.87 inches across with a 7.28 inch hole. Small sizes mark a path discreetly, while the larger sizes throw enough light to wash a wall or a tree.

The mains power is the third. It runs on standard household mains, AC 85 to 265V, so no separate transformer is needed. The face plate is stainless steel, the body is cast aluminum and the lens is tempered glass.

Choosing the wattage and color

Choose the wattage for the throw you want and the light color to suit the surface you are washing.

• Use 1W or 3W to mark a path or a deck edge.
• Use 5W to 9W for shrubs, low walls and small trees.
• Use 12W to 18W for large trees and tall walls.
• Choose RGB with a remote if you want to change the color from a distance.

To wash a wall, set the light close to the base so the beam rises across the surface. To light a tree, set it a short distance from the trunk so the light climbs into the branches.

Layering it with other lighting

Underground lights are the accent and wayfinding layer of garden lighting. They wash walls and trees from below and mark paths and edges, while wall lights handle doors and string lights add atmosphere over seating.

Colored light is best used with restraint. A single RGB light on a feature tree can change with the season or the occasion, while the rest of the garden stays in warm or cold white for a calm, planned look.

Low spots in a garden are where this light earns its keep. A path at the bottom of a slope, a lawn that holds water after a storm or a patio beside a downspout can all flood for a few hours, and a fully sealed light carries on working through it. Clearing the grit around the face afterward helps the water drain away quickly.

Planning the cut holes before ordering is worth the time. Mark each position, note the wattage for each spot, and check the hole size in the dimensions, so every light fits snugly and sits level.

For care, wipe the lens clean with a soft damp cloth so dirt does not dull the beam. Clear leaves and grit from around the face now and then so water can drain away.
