Choosing the size and placement

For a driveway or a path, space the lights evenly along one edge or both, keeping the same wattage and light color throughout. For a tree, place the light a short distance from the trunk so the beam climbs into the branches.

Uplighting from the ground brings out texture. The beam rises across bark, stone and foliage, casting shadows upward and giving the garden a sense of height after dark.

Steps and changes in level are another good use. A small inground light set into the paving at the bottom and top of a short flight of garden steps marks the change in level clearly, without adding a raised fixture that someone could trip over on the way down.

For care, wipe the top with a soft, dry cloth, keep the electrical connections dry and away from standing water, and confirm the seal is closed before use. Clearing leaves and soil from the top now and then keeps the light bright.
