A few installation tips help:
- Wipe the surface clean and dry before you start, so the strip holds firmly.
- Peel the backing away a little at a time and press the strip down as you go, keeping the run straight along the tread nosing or the wall.
- Cut only on the marked points, so the strip keeps working.
- Mount the sensor where it clearly sees the approach to the stair.
Plan where the power supply and controller will sit before you begin, so the cable run is neat and hidden.
It also helps to test the sensor position before the strip is stuck down for good. Hold the sensor where you plan to mount it, walk toward the stair from the directions people usually come, and check that it triggers in time. A few minutes of testing saves peeling and sticking the strip again later.
Layering it with other lighting
Step lighting is a low, guiding layer of light. It works best alongside a ceiling light or wall lights on the stair for general light when you need it, with the strip taking over at night. That way, the stair is safe at all hours without a bright light burning through the night.
