Over a table, keep the lowest ring high enough that people can see each other across it. In a stairwell, stagger the rings so they read clearly from the landing and the hall.

It wires into a ceiling point rather than plugging in. Turn the power off at the breaker before starting, and have an electrician run a supply to the spot if there is nothing there already.
