The build is the second strength. The housing is die cast aluminum with a tempered glass lens, on a steel ground spike, and it is weather rated for outdoor use. It runs on AC85 to 265V, so a supply has to be run to each spot, and an electrician should handle it if there is no supply there already. Plan the positions and the cable route before any planting goes in.

To light a tree, place the spotlight a short distance from the trunk and aim it upward. To graze a wall, place it close to the base and tilt the head almost parallel to the surface.

Layering it with other lighting

Spotlights are the accent layer of garden lighting. They pick out the best features, while path lights guide the way and wall lights handle doors and seating areas. The contrast between lit features and soft darkness is what makes a garden look designed at night.

Two or three spotlights spaced along the base of the wall, aimed upward, pick out windows, columns and the texture of brick or stone, and make the home look welcoming from the street. Warm white is usually the most flattering choice for a facade.

Colored light is best kept for special moments. A red, green or blue spotlight on one tree or one wall can mark a holiday or a party, while the rest of the garden stays in white.

For care, wipe the spotlight with a soft, dry cloth, and clear soil and leaves from the lens seasonally so the beam stays crisp and bright.
