Well lights are a lovely way to light a garden, but many of them share one flaw: they shine straight up, right into the eyes of anyone walking past. The Recessed Louvre Well Light takes a different approach. It sits flush in a path or a lawn and throws its light out sideways through shielded louvered windows, so the light falls across the ground and the planting instead of into your face.

What makes the louvre well light stand out

The build is the third. The housing is die cast aluminum with tempered glass and a stainless steel trim, and it is rated IP67, so it copes with rain and irrigation. It measures 3.15 inches on each side, a compact square that sits neatly in paving or turf.

Choosing the options

Three things are fixed at the point of ordering: the output, the number of windows and the supply.

• Choose 3W for a soft marker light along a narrow path.
• Choose 6W or 10W for a wider path, a patio or a lawn.
• Choose the window count by where the light needs to fall.
• Choose DC12V or AC85 to 265V to match the supply on site.

The low voltage version needs a suitable transformer on the circuit, and the mains version does not, so they are not interchangeable afterwards. Have an electrician make the connection with the power off at the breaker.

When setting the light, turn it so the open windows face the area you want lit. On a path, that means facing the windows along the path, not into the planting beside it.

Layering it with other lighting

Louvre well lights are the gentle, wayfinding layer of garden lighting. They light the ground softly, while spotlights pick out trees and walls and wall lights handle doors. Because they avoid glare, they are especially comfortable beside seating areas where people look toward them.

Intersections are where the four window version shines. Where two paths meet, or at the center of a small courtyard, a light with all four sides open casts a soft cross of light that marks the junction and lights each path leading away from it. It becomes a quiet focal point after dark.

Planning the layout on paper helps with a mixed run. Mark the paths, note where one or two windows are needed along each edge and where a four window light suits a junction, and match the supply for every light so the electrician can plan the circuit and any transformer in one go.

Seating areas benefit most from the shielded design. Because the light leaves through the side windows rather than pointing up, people sitting on a patio can look out over the lit garden without a bright point of light in their eyes.

For care, wipe the light with a soft, dry cloth, and clear soil and leaf debris from the lens after heavy weather. Do not pressure wash directly at the fitting. Slight color variation between screens and the finish in person is normal.
