Some of the best places for a well light are also the hardest to dig into. A balcony, a roof terrace, a patio laid over a concrete slab or a deck with joists just below the boards leaves only a little depth to work with. Most well lights need more than that. What makes the slim inground light stand out

The short body comes first. Where a standard well light needs a deep hole below the paving, this one needs very little, so it works over a slab, in a thin bed of screed or between deck joists. That opens up balconies, terraces and decks to the kind of flush lighting usually reserved for gardens with deep soil.

The build is the second strength. It keeps the same sealed IP67 build as a deeper fitting, just in a slimmer can. The face is stainless steel, the body is aluminum and the lens is tempered glass, so it copes with rain and outdoor weather.

Choosing the size and supply

Pick the face size for the space and the output for the effect.

• Use the DM65 at 1W to mark a balcony edge or a step discreetly.
• Use the DM80 or DM100 at 3W for paths and deck edges.
• Use the DM100 or DM120 at 6W or 9W for a brighter wash on a terrace.
• Plan the cut hole against the face size before ordering.

Read the supply option carefully. The DC12V and DC24V versions are not interchangeable once ordered and must match what is on site, so confirm the supply with your electrician first. Have the electrician make the connection with the power off at the breaker.

On a deck, check where the joists run before marking each position, so every light lands between them. On a terrace, plan the positions before the screed goes down.

Layering it with other lighting

Slim inground lights are a subtle wayfinding and accent layer. They mark edges and light the floor from below, while wall lights handle doors and string lights add atmosphere over a table. On a small balcony, a few flush lights and one wall light can be all you need.

Flush lights are especially welcome on a roof terrace or a balcony, where there is little room to spare. With nothing standing up from the floor, chairs, planters and people can move freely, and the view out over the garden or the street stays uninterrupted.

Timber decks deserve a little extra planning. Mark the joist positions on the boards before cutting, keep each light at least a board or two in from the edge, and route the low voltage cable along the joists so it stays out of sight and away from standing water.

On a terrace laid over a slab, the positions need to be fixed before the screed goes down. Marking each point clearly while the screed is laid keeps every opening exactly where it should be.

For care, wipe the light with a soft, dry cloth and keep the lens clear of soil and debris. Do not pressure wash directly at the fitting. Slight color variation between screens and the finish in person is normal.
