Some of the places that most need a marker light are the hardest to fit one into. Stone steps, a retaining wall or a deck laid over a slab leave no room to dig a deep hole for a well light. The Surface Mount LED Ground Spot Light solves that by sitting on top. That low, surface mounted design is what makes it such a useful landscape light. It marks edges and steps clearly, and its sideways light grazes the surface instead of glaring back at you.

What makes the surface mount light stand out

The slim profile comes first. At 0.55 inches tall, it disappears into a step or a deck board instead of standing up as an obstacle. There is nothing to trip over and very little to see during the day.

The sideways light is the second strength. The light comes out through one or two slots in the side, so it grazes the surface and shows where the edge is without shining into your eyes as you climb the stairs. One lit side suits a wall run or a step edge, and two suit the middle of a path.

Where it looks best, around the home

• Terraces over slabs. Surface mounting avoids cutting into the structure.

Mirror chrome suits modern stone and glass, matte aluminum blends with pale decking and concrete, and matte black disappears into dark timber and slate.

Choosing the options

Three things are set at the point of ordering: the finish, the light color and the supply with the number of lit sides.

• Choose one lit side for step edges and wall runs.
• Choose two lit sides for the middle of a path.
• Choose 2200K or 3000K for a warm glow, 4000K or 6000K for a crisper light.
• Choose DC12V or DC24V to match the driver you will use.

It runs on a low voltage supply, so a transformer or driver is required and is not included, and it must match the voltage of the option you chose. Have an electrician make the connection and plan the cable runs.

On steps, keep every light at the same position on each tread so the line of light looks even from the bottom of the stairs. On a wall, space them evenly along the top.

Layering it with other lighting

Surface mount spots are the edge and wayfinding layer of outdoor lighting. They mark steps and edges, while wall lights brighten doors and spotlights pick out trees. Together, they make a terrace or a deck safe and inviting after dark.

Grazing light is flattering on textured surfaces. On a stone wall, the light picks out every edge and joint; on a deck, it runs along the grain of the boards, making the surface look rich and warm after dark.

For care, wipe the light with a soft, dry cloth, and dry the housing after heavy rain so water spots do not set on the chrome. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the lens.

Planning the layout on paper saves time on the day. Mark each light, note which side should be lit, and sketch the cable route back to the driver, so the electrician can wire the run in one go.

Mixing one sided and two sided lights along a route works well. Use one sided lights on the step edges and beside a wall, where the light should fall one way, and two sided lights in the open stretches of a path, where the ground on both sides benefits from the glow.
