Match the wattage to the area rather than buying the largest. The lower wattages suit a doorway, a step or a shed, while the higher ones are meant for a driveway, a yard or a work area. A light that is too strong for a small space simply creates glare and harsh shadows.
Mount it high and angle it downward, so the light lands on the ground rather than into a window across the way. Under the eave of a garage or on the corner of a house is a common spot, because the height lets the beam spread over a wide area.
Installing it
One floodlight is included in the wattage you select. It arrives without a plug, so it connects to a mains supply. Turn off the breaker before wiring it, and have an electrician run a feed if there is none where you want it.
- Pick the spot and picture where the beam will land after dark.
- Make the connection with the breaker off.
- Angle the light downward before tightening it.
- Confirm the seal is closed before switching it on.
Layering it with other lighting
A floodlight does the heavy lifting, but it rarely works alone. Care
Wipe the floodlight with a soft, dry cloth, keep the electrical connections dry and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. For outdoor units, confirm the seal is closed before use. Clearing leaves, dust and cobwebs from the front now and then keeps the light output strong.
