A flush mount light earns its place by staying out of the way. It sits tight to the ceiling, or in this case inside it, so a room gets good light without a fixture hanging into the space. What makes the borderless downlight stand out

The missing trim is the first thing people notice, or rather do not notice. A standard downlight has a ring around its edge that frames the hole in the ceiling. Without that ring, the ceiling surface runs right up to the light, and the fitting reads as a clean opening. In a modern room with plain ceilings, that small change makes a big difference.

The twin head is the second. With two heads in one fitting, you can aim two beams from a single cut out. One can wash a wall while the other picks out a counter, a shelf or a painting. That saves cutting a second hole and gives you more control over where the light goes.

Sizing starts with the cut out. Style A needs a 2.6 inch cut out and measures 3 inches outside. Style B needs a 3.7 inch cut out and measures 4.2 inches outside. A few guidelines help with placement:

• To wash a wall, place the lights a short distance out from the wall and aim the heads toward it, so the light grazes the surface.
• Over a counter, position them so the beam falls in front of you rather than behind your head, to avoid working in your own shadow.
• In a hallway, space them evenly along the center line so the pools of light form a steady rhythm.
• Choose the same style, finish and light color for every fitting in one room so they match.

This is a recessed fitting, so a ceiling cut out is required and an electrician should make the connection.

Layering it with other lighting

Recessed downlights are excellent at two jobs: general light spread across a ceiling, and accent light aimed at walls and objects. They are less good at creating a soft, cozy glow on their own. The best rooms combine them with lamps and wall lights that bring light down to eye level.

In a living room, use the twin heads to light a wall and a painting, then add a floor lamp and a table lamp for warmth. In a kitchen, pair them with a pendant over the island.
