Rattan & Woven

Rattan, bamboo and other plant fibers soften a room in a way smooth materials cannot. A weave adds texture up close and pattern from across the room. This page gathers pieces whose material listing names rattan, bamboo or a similar natural fiber such as seagrass, not synthetic weaves made to look like them. You will find woven bamboo ceiling lights and pendants, bamboo and rattan wall lamps, a rattan hanging lantern and a woven rattan solar lantern, rattan and seagrass wall baskets, a rattan hot air balloon wall hanging, bamboo serving and bathroom trays, a stackable bamboo shoe rack, a bamboo desktop bookshelf, a headphone stand, rattan placemats and a palo santo and sage holder.

How woven light fixtures glow

A woven shade lets light escape through the gaps in the weave, so it throws a pattern of light and shadow across the ceiling and walls. A tight weave gives a gentle glow, while an open weave casts bolder patterns. Warm white bulbs suit the honey tones of bamboo and rattan. Because the fibers sit close to the light source, LED bulbs are the sensible choice, since they run much cooler than incandescent bulbs.

Caring for natural fibers

• Dust often: Use a soft brush or the brush attachment on a vacuum to lift dust out of the weave.
• Mind the humidity: Very dry air can make fibers brittle, while constant damp invites mildew. A room with moderate humidity suits them best.
• Keep water brief: Wipe bamboo trays with a damp cloth and dry them right away rather than soaking them.
• Outdoors: Natural fibers last longest under cover, on a porch or under a pergola and out of steady rain. Check each product description for its outdoor use notes.
