Why you'll love it

Craftsman charm with a modern outline

This box lantern has the simple crossbar panes of a craftsman window, so it looks at home beside a farmhouse or bungalow door. The frosted glass glows a warm cream, like a lamp seen through a window, and the flat roof sends light down onto the steps below.

There are two sizes, a small one for a side or garage door and a larger one for the main entry. Choose textured clear water glass for a brighter, sparkling light, or frosted glass for a soft glow. It uses a replaceable screw base LED bulb and is hardwired.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Mission Pane Box Lantern, Stainless Steel and Glass Porch Light Such a Good Outdoor Wall Lantern

Craftsman bungalows and farmhouses were designed around simple, honest details: square posts, divided windows, plain trim. Their lighting should follow the same idea, a clean box with a pane pattern that looks like it was always part of the house.

The Mission Pane Box Lantern is a square black stainless steel box with a flat overhanging roof and a crossbar pane pattern on every side. It holds one replaceable E27 LED bulb in warm white 3000K. The 7.3 inch size is 6.1 inches wide and 6.1 inches from the wall, rated 5W and about 485 lumens. The 11 inch size is 9.1 inches wide and 6.3 inches from the wall, rated 12W and about 1,158 lumens. Choose water glass or frosted glass. It is hardwired and rated IP65.

What makes the mission box lantern stand out

The pane pattern is the heart of it. A crossbar divides each side into panes, just like a craftsman window, so the lantern looks like it belongs to the house.

The two glass choices set the mood. Frosted glass glows a warm cream and hides the bulb, like lamplight through a window. Water glass is clear with a textured surface that sparkles and gives a brighter light.

The flat roof is practical. It overhangs the glass, keeps rain off and pushes the light down onto the steps and the door.

Stainless steel and IP65 make it tough. The box stands up to rain, heat and cold on an open wall as well as a covered porch.

The two sizes suit different doors. The smaller one fits side and garage doors, while the larger one gives more than twice the light for a main entry.

The light is warm and practical. Every size uses warm white 3000K, the soft color of a lamp in a window, with a color rendering index of 80 so brick, painted siding and planting look natural. The open bottom of the box lets light fall straight onto the step, which makes finding keys easy.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Beside the front door. A pair frames a craftsman entry.
  • Porch posts. A small lantern on each post.
  • Garage doors. The smaller size marks each side of the drive.
  • Back doors. Warm light on the step and the handle.
  • Garden sheds and studios. A cozy lantern by an outbuilding door.

It suits craftsman, bungalow, farmhouse and prairie style homes, and it is simple enough for a modern facade too.

Choosing the size and placement

The 7.3 inch lantern suits a side door, a garage door or a small porch. The 11 inch lantern is wider and brighter, better for the main front door or a large entry.

Mount the lantern with the glass around eye level beside the door, and keep a pair at the same height.

A few guidelines help:

  • A lantern roughly a quarter to a third of the door height looks balanced.
  • Use a pair on either side of the door for a symmetrical entry.
  • Use the smaller size to repeat the look at the garage and back door.
  • Plan the wiring with an electrician before the wall is finished.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included, and the lantern mounts to a standard outdoor junction box.

Layering it with other lighting

A box lantern is the welcome layer of outdoor lighting. Pair it with path lights along the walk, and browse the outdoor post lights collection for a matching lantern at the end of the drive.

Keep the glass consistent. Frosted lanterns everywhere give a soft, unified glow, and water glass everywhere gives a brighter, sparkling front.

Repeat the square shape. Square porch posts, divided windows and simple house numbers carry the mission look through the facade.

Looking after it is easy. Switch it off and let it cool, wipe the steel with a soft, dry cloth and dry it fully, and clean the glass with glass cleaner on the cloth, never sprayed on the fixture.

Is the mission box lantern right for your space?

This light is a strong fit if you:

  • Have a craftsman, bungalow or farmhouse home.
  • Like a simple pane pattern and a flat roof.
  • Want a choice of frosted or textured clear glass.
  • Need a small size for side doors and a larger one for the entry.

It may not suit a sleek modern facade that calls for a linear light, or an ornate traditional home that suits a more decorative lantern.

What is it made of?

What bulb does it use?

Is it hardwired?
