Why you'll love it

Twice the glow at the gate

A single lantern can leave a wide entry or a gate half in shadow, and two lanterns on one plate spread the glow evenly across both sides. The curved arms and carved octagonal backplate give the fixture the look of an old European street lamp, and the glass lanterns shine warmly by night.

Choose from three lantern styles, crisp window mullions, ornate gothic arches or classic curved glass, and a black or gold finish. It is die cast aluminum rated IP56, takes two replaceable bulbs, and hardwires to a standard junction box.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Old World Twin Lantern Wall Light, Die Cast Aluminum Sconce Such a Good Outdoor Wall Light

A wide entrance, a garden gate or a courtyard corner often needs more light than one lantern can give. Two lanterns on a single backplate solve that neatly, lighting both sides of the wall from one junction box.

This double head wall light carries two glass lanterns on curved arms from a carved octagonal backplate. It comes in three lantern styles: Castle, 16.9 inches tall and 16.5 inches wide; Forbidden City, 14.6 inches tall and 15.8 inches wide; and Star Anise, 14.6 inches tall and 16.9 inches wide. Each style comes in black or gold. It is die cast aluminum with glass, rated IP56, and takes two replaceable E27 LED bulbs with CRI 80 light on a hardwired 110V to 240V supply.

What makes the twin lantern stand out

Two lanterns mean even light. The glow spreads to both sides of the backplate, so a wide door or gate is lit across its full width without a dark side.

Three styles give real choice. Castle has six sided lanterns with window mullions, Forbidden City has ornate gothic arched lanterns, and Star Anise has classic curved clear glass lanterns.

The carved octagonal backplate ties it together. Beaded edges and scrolls frame the arms and look handsome in daylight.

Black and gold suit different walls. Black gives a crisp outline on pale stucco and stone, while gold has an aged, warm glow that flatters stucco and brick.

It is made for weather. Die cast aluminum and glass with an IP56 rating handle rain and snow, and it is rated for 13°F below zero to 149°F.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Wide front doors. One fixture lights both sides of the entry evenly.
  • Garden gates. A twin lantern on the pier welcomes guests from the path.
  • Courtyard walls. Broad, warm light for outdoor dining.
  • Garage walls. Two lanterns in one fixture light a wide drive.
  • Porches with columns. A classic twin fixture between columns frames the door.

It suits Mediterranean, Spanish, French, Victorian and traditional homes, and the Star Anise style also works on a simple colonial facade.

Choosing the size and placement

The three styles differ in size: Castle is 16.9 inches tall and 16.5 inches wide, Forbidden City 14.6 by 15.8 inches, and Star Anise 14.6 by 16.9 inches. All share a backplate 9.3 inches tall and 4.9 inches wide, with measurements in the Dimensions section above.

A few guidelines help:

  • Center it above or beside the door where both lanterns can spread light across the entry.
  • Allow about 17 inches of clear wall width for the two lanterns.
  • Use a pair on either side of a wide door or garage for a formal look.
  • Plan the wiring with an electrician, who can set the junction box at the right height before the fixture goes up.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included.

Layering it with other lighting

A twin lantern gives a strong welcome at the door. Add path lights along the walk so guests are guided toward it.

For a gate or the drive, outdoor post lights in a matching traditional style carry the look across the property.

Keep both bulbs the same warm white, and match the other outdoor fixtures, so the two lanterns glow identically.

The twin lantern also works hard in daylight. The carved backplate and curved arms give a plain wall a focal point, and the lantern glass catches the sun, so the entry looks finished at every hour. Choose the style that echoes the house: Castle mullions for colonial and craftsman homes, Forbidden City arches for ornate Mediterranean fronts, and Star Anise curves for a softer classic look.

Looking after it is simple. Switch it off and let it cool, then wipe the aluminum with a soft, dry cloth and dry it fully. For the glass, spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the fixture, and avoid abrasive cleaners that could dull the finish.

Is the twin lantern right for your space?

This light is a strong fit if you:

  • Need to light a wide door, a gate or a courtyard wall.
  • Want a classic twin lantern in black or gold.
  • Like a choice of three lantern styles.
  • Can have a hardwired light installed.

It may crowd a narrow wall beside a small door, and it does not suit a minimalist modern facade.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are the styles?

Castle is 16.9 inches tall and 16.5 inches wide, Forbidden City 14.6 by 15.8 inches, and Star Anise 14.6 by 16.9 inches.

What is it made of?

Die cast aluminum with glass lanterns, in a black or gold finish.

What light does it give?

Two replaceable E27 LED bulbs with CRI 80 light, one in each lantern.

How do the styles differ?

Castle has window mullions, Forbidden City has ornate gothic arches, and Star Anise has classic curved clear glass.

Is it hardwired?

Yes. It runs on 110V to 240V and mounts to a standard junction box, installed by a licensed electrician.

Is one enough for my door?

One twin lantern lights a standard door well. For a wide double door or garage, a pair gives a formal look.

How much wall space does it need?

Will it suit a gate?

Yes. On a gate pier or a courtyard wall, the two lanterns spread light across the opening.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let it cool, wipe the aluminum dry, and spray glass cleaner onto the cloth for the glass.

What if the size is wrong?
