Some of the spaces that most need a ceiling light have no wiring at all. A garden shed, a detached garage, a cabin, a covered porch or a workshop at the end of the yard can be dark and awkward after sunset, and bringing power out to them is often expensive. Choosing the size and placement

• For a small shed or a closet, a smaller light with a compact panel is usually enough.
• For a garage or workshop, choose a larger light for broader coverage.
• Mount the light centrally on the ceiling of the space you want to light.
• Place the panel where it gets several hours of direct sun, away from trees and roof shadows.

Plan the cable route before mounting either part. The cable needs to reach from the panel to the light, passing through a window frame, a vent or a drilled hole, so measure the path first.

Layering it with other lighting

In an outbuilding, this light is the main source of light, and often the only one. To extend the lighting outside, add solar lights along the path to the shed or garage, so you can walk out after dark and find the door easily.

Seasons matter with solar. Shorter winter days mean less charge, so in the darker months place the panel where it catches the most direct sun, and use the light for the tasks that need it rather than leaving it on all evening. In summer, the long days keep the battery well charged.

Think about security as well. A lit shed or garage is easier to use and less inviting to intruders, and because the light needs no wiring, it can go up in an afternoon.
