Why you'll love it

Stately light for tall doors and gates

A long column of glass beside a front door or on a gate pillar gives the entrance height and a sense of occasion. The light fills the lantern from top to bottom, so it glows as one tall line beside the door and lights the wall and the steps evenly, while the dark bronze frame and faceted roof look stately in daylight.

It comes in two heights with clear or striped glass. Choose hardwired with a replaceable bulb, or solar with panels built into the roof, a remote control and three light colors, which needs no wiring at all. Each piece is made to order.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Tall Column Wall Lantern, Dark Bronze Aluminum Porch Light Such a Good Outdoor Wall Lantern

A tall front door, a pair of stone pillars or a gate in a courtyard wall all ask for a light with height. A small fixture on a big entrance looks like an afterthought, while a long lantern fills the space and gives the whole entrance a sense of occasion.

The Tall Column Wall Lantern is a vintage lantern with a dark bronze die cast aluminum frame, a faceted roof and a long backplate, in clear or striped glass. It comes in two heights, 22.8 and 31.5 inches, each 4.5 inches wide and 8.7 inches from the wall, weighing 13.2 lb and 17.6 lb. Choose Hardwired, with a replaceable E27 LED bulb in warm white 3000K at 110V, or Solar, with panels built into the roof and an integrated LED in 3000K, 4500K or 6000K set by remote control and rated to run 16 to 24 hours. It is rated IP54.

What makes the column lantern stand out

The height makes the statement. Glass runs almost the full length, so the lantern glows as a tall column of light and gives even a large entrance a strong vertical frame.

Solar removes the wiring problem. With panels built into the roof, the solar version can go on a gate pillar, a courtyard wall or a garden entrance far from power.

The remote gives control. On the solar version, a remote switches between warm, neutral and cool white, so the light can match the house or the season.

Two glasses change the look. Clear glass shows the light source and sparkles; striped glass breaks the glow into fine lines and softens it.

The dark bronze finish is warm. It sits well on stone, stucco and brick, and the faceted roof and curled bracket give it a traditional outline.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Gate pillars. A solar lantern lights the gate with no wiring.
  • Tall front doors. A pair frames a tall or double entrance.
  • Courtyard walls. The long glow lights the wall from top to bottom.
  • Garage doors. A lantern each side gives the drive a stately look.
  • Garden entrances. A solar lantern marks an arch or a side gate.

It suits traditional, Mediterranean, colonial and European style homes, and looks especially at home on stone and stucco.

Choosing the size and placement

The two heights are 22.8 and 31.5 inches, both 4.5 inches wide and 8.7 inches from the wall. The 22.8 inch suits a standard front door, and the 31.5 inch suits tall entries, double doors and gate pillars.

A few guidelines help:

  • Mount pairs at the same height either side of the door.
  • For the solar version, mount it where the roof panels get direct sun during the day.
  • For the hardwired version, plan the wiring with an electrician.
  • Allow for the weight, 13.2 lb or 17.6 lb, and fix it to a solid wall or pillar.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included. It is rated IP54, so a spot with some shelter from driving rain keeps it looking its best.

Layering it with other lighting

A tall lantern is the welcome layer at a grand entrance. For gate posts and low walls, browse the pillar lights collection, and light the approach with the path lights collection.

Match the whites. If the entrance uses warm white, set the solar version to 3000K too, so the gate and the door read as one scene.

Choose the glass for the view. Clear glass sparkles from the street, while striped glass gives a softer glow for a door that people approach closely.

Looking after the lantern is easy. Switch off the hardwired version and let it cool, then wipe the frame with a soft, dry cloth and clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, never onto the lantern. On the solar version, wipe the roof panels now and then so they charge well.

Is the column lantern right for your space?

This lantern is a strong fit if you:

  • Have a tall entrance, a gate pillar or a courtyard wall to light.
  • Want a solar option for a place without wiring.
  • Like a traditional lantern in dark bronze.
  • Want a choice of clear or striped glass.

It may not suit a small porch where a shorter fixture fits better, or a strictly minimal modern facade.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are available?

Two heights: 22.8 and 31.5 inches, both 4.5 inches wide and 8.7 inches from the wall.

What is it made of?

Die cast aluminum with glass, finished in dark bronze. Slight variation in color and finish between units is normal.

What is the difference between the glass options?

Clear Glass shows the light source and sparkles. Striped Glass breaks the glow into fine lines and softens it.

How long does the solar version run?

It is rated to run 16 to 24 hours. Mount it where the roof panels get direct sun during the day.

How is the hardwired version installed?

It connects to a standard outdoor junction box at 110V. Have an electrician install it with the power off at the breaker.

Is it waterproof?

It is rated IP54 against splashing rain and dust, so some shelter from driving rain keeps it looking its best.

How heavy is it?

13.2 lb for the 22.8 inch and 17.6 lb for the 31.5 inch, so fix it to a solid wall or pillar.

Will it suit a gate pillar?

Yes. The solar version needs no wiring, and the 31.5 inch height gives a pillar real presence.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the frame with a soft, dry cloth and spray glass cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the lantern, for the glass. Keep the solar panels clean.

What if the size is wrong?

Unused items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Email info@norafurnish.com with your order number first, and the team will help with the return.
