Why you'll love it

Old world charm at the front door

A lantern with a curled scroll arm and a tapered cage belongs beside an arched door, a stone wall or a stucco entry. At night the rippled panels break the bulb into a gentle shimmer that plays across the wall, and by day the black coffee finish looks like old ironwork against warm plaster and stone.

It comes in three heights, from a lantern for a standard single door to a grand size for a double entry or gate pier. The body is die cast aluminum with water ripple polycarbonate panels, it takes one replaceable LED bulb and it is hardwired over a standard junction box.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Tuscan Scroll Porch Lantern, Dark Coffee Aluminum Wall Light Such a Good Outdoor Wall Lantern

Some houses call for a lantern with history in it. An arched front door, a stucco wall, a stone entry or a garden gate between two piers all look their best beside a light that seems to have been there for generations. The right lantern finishes the architecture as much as it lights the way.

The Tuscan Scroll Porch Lantern brings that old world look in die cast aluminum. A curled scroll arm holds a domed, six sided cage with water ripple polycarbonate panels, finished in black coffee, a deep brown. It comes in three heights, 17.1, 20.5 and 25.6 inches, projecting 8.7 to 13.6 inches from the wall. It takes one replaceable E27 LED bulb rated 5W and 485 lumens in warm white 3000K, is hardwired for 110V to 240V and is rated IP56 for outdoor use.

What makes the Tuscan lantern stand out

The scroll arm gives it character. The curl above the lantern echoes wrought ironwork, so the fixture reads as a traditional piece even from across the street.

The rippled panels create a soft shimmer. Instead of a bare bulb, the water ripple texture breaks up the light into gentle highlights that move across the panels and the wall behind.

The finish suits warm materials. Black coffee is a deep brown that looks like aged metal against stucco, sandstone, terracotta and warm painted walls, where pure black can look harsh.

Die cast aluminum keeps it practical. The body stands up to rain, and the polycarbonate panels are lighter than glass, which makes the lantern easier to handle and fit.

The three heights scale to the entrance. The 17.1 inch lantern suits a standard door, while the 20.5 and 25.6 inch sizes hold their own beside tall doors, double entries and gate piers.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Arched front doors. A pair of lanterns frames the arch with warm light.
  • Gate piers. The larger sizes mark the entrance to a drive or garden.
  • Covered porches and loggias. Rippled light for evenings outside.
  • Garage doors. Lanterns on each side give a traditional garage a finished look.
  • Courtyard walls. A soft shimmer on stucco or stone around seating.

It suits Mediterranean, Spanish, Tuscan and traditional homes, and it works well on farmhouse and cottage facades with warm painted walls.

Choosing the size and placement

The 17.1 inch lantern projects 8.7 inches from the wall, with a lantern 7.3 inches wide and a backplate 7.1 by 4.5 inches. The 20.5 inch lantern projects 12.6 inches, with a lantern 9.3 inches wide and a backplate 8.1 by 5.1 inches. The 25.6 inch lantern projects 13.6 inches. They weigh 5.5, 6.6 and 7.7 lb.

A few guidelines help:

  • For a standard door, a lantern roughly a quarter to a third of the door height looks balanced, so the 17.1 inch size usually fits.
  • For tall doors, double entries and gate piers, choose the 20.5 or 25.6 inch size.
  • Mount pairs at the same height, with the lantern slightly above eye level.
  • It is hardwired, so plan the wiring with an electrician.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included.

Layering it with other lighting

A wall lantern is the welcome layer at the door. Continue the traditional look to the edge of the property with outdoor post lights at the gate, or browse outdoor lanterns for matching pieces on other walls.

Keep the light warm. A 3000K bulb flatters stucco and stone, and matching it across the exterior keeps the house looking cohesive.

Repeat the finish. Dark bronze and brown metals, from house numbers to door hardware, tie the lantern into the facade.

Care is simple. Switch it off and let it cool, then wipe the aluminum with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the diffuser panels with a soft, lightly damp cloth only, since solvents can cloud polycarbonate.

Is the Tuscan lantern right for your space?

This light is a strong fit if you:

  • Want a traditional lantern with a scroll arm and old world detail.
  • Have an arched door, stucco wall, stone entry or gate pier.
  • Want a soft, shimmering glow rather than a bare bulb.
  • Need a size for a single door or a grand entrance.

It may not suit a strictly modern or minimalist facade, or a home without a way to hardwire exterior fixtures.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are available?

Three heights: 17.1, 20.5 and 25.6 inches, projecting 8.7, 12.6 and 13.6 inches from the wall.

What is it made of?

The body is die cast aluminum and the panels are polycarbonate with a water ripple texture. Slight variation in color and finish between units is normal.

What color is the black coffee finish?

It is a deep brown close to black, which looks like aged metal against stucco, stone and warm painted walls.

What does the water ripple texture do?

It breaks the bulb into soft, shifting highlights, so the lantern shimmers instead of showing a bare point of light.

Is it hardwired?

Yes. It runs on 110V to 240V and mounts over a standard junction box. Have a licensed electrician make the connection.

Is it weatherproof?

It is rated IP56 for outdoor use, which covers rain and dust on a porch, entry or gate pier.

Is one light enough, or two?

A pair, one on each side of the door, gives a balanced, formal look. A single lantern on the handle side suits a narrow entrance.

Will it suit a gate pier?

Yes. The 20.5 and 25.6 inch sizes have the scale to stand on gate piers and mark a drive or garden entrance.

How is it cleaned?

Switch it off and let it cool, wipe the aluminum with a soft, dry cloth and clean the panels with a lightly damp cloth, never solvents.

What if the size is wrong?
