Why you'll love it

Rippling light like sun on water

Most porch lights simply glow, but water wave glass makes the light move. The LED shines through the thick textured glass and scatters ripples of warm light over the wall, like reflections off a pool on a summer evening, while the black cap and base frame the glass as a crisp, modern block by day.

Choose Solar, with a panel built into the top and no wiring at all, or Hardwired to a junction box by the door. There is one size in black with clear glass, and it is happiest under an eave or a porch roof, out of driving rain.

The Nora Furnish guide

What Makes the Water Wave Glass Box Lantern, Black Aluminum Outdoor Wall Light Such a Good Outdoor Wall Lantern

Light is most memorable when it does something. A plain porch fixture lights the door, but a lantern that throws patterns onto the wall gives the entrance a little magic, the kind of detail guests notice as they walk up.

The Water Wave Glass Box Lantern is a rectangular lantern with a block of water wave glass between a black die cast aluminum cap and base. It measures 11 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches from the wall, with a 6 inch backplate, and weighs 8.2 lb. The integrated LED is warm white 3000K with a CRI of 90, rated at 1000 lumens. Choose Solar, with a panel built into the top, or Hardwired at 110V to 220V. It is rated IP43.

What makes the water wave lantern stand out

The glass makes the pattern. The deep ripples in the glass bend the light, so bright and soft bands spread across the wall above and below the lantern, like light off water.

The frame keeps it modern. A flat black cap and base hold the glass as a clean rectangular block, so the look is contemporary rather than rustic.

Solar opens up new places. The solar version has a panel built into the top and needs no wiring, so it can go on a fence, a shed, a garden wall or a gate.

The light quality is high. Warm 3000K light with a CRI of 90 shows brick, wood and planting in true color.

It works as a pair. Two lanterns either side of a door, or a row along a garden wall, repeat the ripple pattern and make the effect bolder.

Where it looks best, around the house

  • Beside the front door. A pair throws ripples over the wall either side.
  • Garden walls. The solar version lights a wall with no wiring.
  • Fences and gates. A lantern marks the gate with patterned light.
  • Covered porches. Sheltered from rain, it glows beside the seating.
  • Sheds and studios. A solar lantern lights the door of an outbuilding.

It suits modern, transitional and farmhouse homes, and the glass looks especially good on pale render, white brick and painted siding, where the ripples show clearly.

Choosing the finish and placement

There is one size, 11 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches from the wall, in black with clear water wave glass. The real choice is the power: Solar for walls without wiring, Hardwired where a junction box is already in place.

A few guidelines help:

  • For the solar version, mount it where the panel on top gets direct sun during the day.
  • Place it under an eave or a porch roof, since it is rated IP43.
  • Mount pairs at the same height either side of a door.
  • For the hardwired version, plan the wiring with an electrician.

All required mounting hardware and instructions are included. At 8.2 lb, it needs a solid wall, fence post or pillar.

Layering it with other lighting

A patterned lantern is the feature layer, the light people remember. For more lights that need no wiring, browse the outdoor solar wall lights collection, and guide guests to the door with the path lights collection.

Keep other lights nearby soft. A bright floodlight on the same wall would wash out the ripples, so let this lantern carry that area.

Repeat it for rhythm. Several along a fence or a garden wall turn a boundary into a glowing feature.

Pick the wall with care. Smooth, pale surfaces show the ripples most clearly, while rough stone breaks them up into a softer sparkle.

Looking after it is easy. Switch off the hardwired version and let it cool, then wipe the metal with a soft, dry cloth and clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, never onto the lantern. On the solar version, wipe the panel now and then so it charges well.

Is the water wave lantern right for your space?

This lantern is a strong fit if you:

  • Want a lantern that throws a rippled pattern of light.
  • Need a solar option for a wall without wiring.
  • Like a clean modern shape in black and glass.
  • Have a sheltered spot under an eave or porch roof.

It may not suit a fully exposed wall that takes driving rain, since it is rated IP43.

Frequently asked questions

How big is it?

11 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches from the wall, with a 6 inch backplate.

What is it made of?

Die cast aluminum with water wave glass. Each piece of textured glass is a little different.

What color is the light?

Warm white 3000K with a CRI of 90.

How does the solar version charge?

A panel built into the top of the cap charges it in daylight, so mount it where the panel gets direct sun.

How bright is it?

It is rated at 16W and 1000 lumens, with a lighting area of about 54 to 171 square feet.

Is it hardwired?

The Hardwired version connects to a standard outdoor junction box at 110V to 220V; have an electrician install it. The Solar version needs no wiring.

Can I put it on a fence?

How heavy is it?

8.2 lb, so fix it to a solid wall, post or pillar.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the metal with a soft, dry cloth and spray glass cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the lantern, for the glass. Keep the solar panel clean.
