About Lamps
Lamps That Put Light Exactly Where You Live
Overhead fixtures light a room; lamps make it comfortable. A lamp brings light down to the level where you actually read, eat, work and unwind, and it lets you change the mood of a space without calling an electrician. Our lamp range covers ceramic and crystal table lamps, slim cordless touch lamps, architect style desk lamps, arc and swing arm floor lamps, paper lanterns, and a playful run of sunset projectors and mushroom lamps. Whether you are furnishing a first apartment or filling a dark corner in a family room, there is a shape and a power option to suit.
How to Choose the Right Lamp
- Match the job: Reading and desk work need a focused, adjustable head. Conversation areas and bedrooms do better with a shade that spreads a soft glow sideways.
- Get the scale right: A table lamp should look substantial next to its table, and a floor lamp should clear the arm of the chair beside it. Our table lamp size guide walks through the measurements.
- Pick a color temperature: Warm white around 2700K to 3000K feels relaxed in living spaces, while 4000K and above reads crisp for tasks. Many of our lamps let you switch between settings.
- Decide on power: Corded lamps run all evening without a second thought. Rechargeable and USB lamps go where outlets do not, such as a dining table or a bookshelf.
Styling tip: Aim for three pools of light in a living room, set at different heights. A floor lamp by the sofa, a table lamp on a console and a small accent lamp on a shelf form a triangle that makes the whole room feel evenly lit and inviting.
Ready to narrow it down? Browse our floor lamps for standing light beside a chair or sofa.
Common Questions About Lamps
Most living rooms feel balanced with three or four light sources beyond the ceiling fixture. Place them so no seat sits in shadow, and vary their heights between tabletop, shelf and floor. If the room is large or open plan, add one more near each separate zone.
Yes, as long as the head can be angled away from the pillow so it does not glare in your eyes. A desk lamp with several brightness levels works well for reading in bed. Check that the cord reaches your outlet without stretching across a walkway.
A cordless lamp has a built in battery, so once charged it runs with no cable attached. A USB lamp draws power from a USB port or adapter while it is on. Some of our lamps do both, charging over USB and then running freely.
Some do and some do not, and the product page says which. Fixtures with a built in LED need no bulb at all. Where a bulb is needed, the listing gives the base type and the maximum wattage so you can buy the right one.
