Walls are the largest surface in most rooms, and what you put on them sets the mood before anyone sits down. Wall decor can be purely beautiful or quietly useful, and the best rooms usually mix both. Planning a Wall That Looks Intentional
- Mock it up: Cut paper templates the size of each piece and tape them up with painter's tape. Live with the layout for a day before you put a single nail in the wall.
- Mind the height: Keep the center of a grouping near eye level, around 57 inches from the floor. Over a sofa, start the lowest piece 8 to 10 inches above the back cushions.
- Keep spacing even: Leave 2 to 3 inches between frames in a cluster. Consistent gaps do more to make mismatched pieces look planned than matching frames do.
- Prep for adhesive panels: Peel and stick panels grip best on clean, dry, smooth walls. Test one piece in a hidden spot first, since textured or freshly painted surfaces may not hold well.
Styling tip: Make the entry wall work twice. Hang a key rack or row of coat hooks at hand height, then place a small clock or framed print centered above it, so the useful piece and the pretty one read as a single arrangement.

Aim for a piece or grouping that spans a little over half to about three quarters of the sofa's width. Anything much smaller floats, and anything wider than the sofa crowds the wall. A gallery of smaller frames counts as one piece when you measure its outer edges.
They can lift paint when removed, especially on flat or recently painted walls. Test in a hidden spot, and when it is time to take them down, warm the adhesive with a hair dryer and peel slowly at a low angle.
Loaded with winter coats and bags, a rack carries far more than its own weight. Screw it into a stud where you can, or use anchors rated for the full load, and check that the screws sit tight after the first few weeks of use.
