Metal is the backbone of most lighting and a lot of storage. It holds a slim arm out from the wall, carries the weight of a chandelier and stands up in a garden bed. How metal finishes behave

• Plated and brushed finishes in gold or brass tones add warmth. Clean them gently, since abrasive pads can wear through the surface.
• Raw copper darkens and can turn greenish over time with air and moisture. Some people love that aged look; others prefer a sealed finish.

Metal outdoors

Iron and ordinary steel rust where their coating is chipped or scratched and water reaches the metal, so touch up chips with matching outdoor paint as soon as you see them.
