Tall Chandeliers Built for Stairwells and Grand Entries
Staircases and double height entries leave a lot of vertical space, and a standard chandelier can look lost in it. Planning a stairwell chandelier
- Length to ceiling height: A common guide is roughly 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height for each foot of ceiling height, so a 20 foot entry can take a fixture around 50 to 60 inches tall.
- Clearance on the stairs: Keep the bottom well above head height for anyone on the highest step it hangs over, generally at least 7 feet.
- Weight and anchoring: Long crystal and multi light fixtures are heavy. They need a ceiling box and framing rated for the load, plus a licensed electrician to hang them.
- Access for bulbs and cleaning: Integrated LED models mean fewer trips up a ladder. Candle styles with separate bulbs look classic but need a plan for reaching them.
