This pot is made from purple clay in a retro Chinese style, the same unglazed material traditionally used for orchid and asparagus fern pots because it lets excess moisture evaporate through the clay walls. That porous quality helps prevent root rot in plants that prefer drier soil between waterings. The muted purple brown tone and simple silhouette give it an aged, collected look rather than a store bought one. It suits plant lovers who keep a mix of Asian inspired ceramics on a windowsill or plant stand. The clay body also gains a slight patina with use, adding character over time.
One clay pot is included in the size selected above, either 7.7 by 5.3 by 2.2 inches or 6.5 by 4.5 by 1.8 inches. It arrives ready to plant.
The clay is left unglazed, so moisture passes out through the walls and the soil dries faster than it would in a glazed or plastic pot. That suits orchids, ferns, succulents and bonsai, which do better dry than wet, but it also means the pot needs watering more often than a sealed one. Soak a new pot in water for a few minutes before the first planting so the dry clay does not pull moisture straight out of fresh soil. Unglazed clay can leave a damp ring, so use a saucer on wood surfaces, and the surface darkens and develops a patina with use.
