About Driveway & Security

Light the Driveway and Keep Dark Corners Covered

A driveway, side yard or garage apron needs light that switches on when it matters and stays out of the way when it does not. This edit gathers the fixtures that do that work: solar and wired flood lights, motion sensor wall lights with two, three or four adjustable heads, camera style security floodlights, solar street lights with remotes, bollards and post lights for the edge of the drive, pillar and post cap lights for gates, and solar barn and shed lights. Motion sensor stair lights are here too, for the steps into a garage.

Where to Put Security Lighting

  • Cover the approaches: Aim lights at the routes a person would actually use, such as the garage door, side gate and back steps, instead of trying to flood the whole lot.
  • Mount high and aim down: Flood lights and motion heads work best about 8 to 10 feet up, angled toward the ground. Higher mounting widens coverage and puts the fixture out of easy reach.
  • Line the drive, do not flood it: Bollards or low post lights along one edge of the driveway show its width to a driver without the glare of a floodlight at eye level.
  • Mark the entrance: A matched pair of pillar lights or post cap lights at the end of the drive helps visitors and delivery drivers find the right house.

Sensors, Solar and the Neighbors

Motion sensors save power and grab more attention than a light left on all night, because a sudden change is hard to miss. Point the sensor at your own property rather than the sidewalk, or passing cars will trigger it all evening. Solar floods and wall lights mount without any wiring, as long as the panel sees several hours of direct sun; a shaded garage wall is better served by a wired fixture. Keep beams pointed down and inside your lot so a bright security light never lands in a neighbor's bedroom window.

Compare flood lights and motion sensor wall lights, or read our motion sensor outdoor lights guide before you choose.

Common Questions About Driveway & Security

Around 8 to 10 feet suits most homes. That height widens the area the sensor watches, keeps the fixture out of easy reach, and lets you tilt the beam down so it lights the ground instead of shining into eyes. Check each listing for its own recommended mounting height.

They do, with shorter run times. Fewer daylight hours and a low sun mean less charge, so a motion sensor model that only switches on when needed stretches the stored power much further than one set to stay on. Keep the panel clean and clear of snow.

Aim every head down and toward your own driveway or door, not across the property line. Choose motion activation over lights that stay on all night, and favor warm light where a listing offers a choice. Lower fixtures such as bollards add safety without any glare at window height.
