About Outdoor Post Lights

Posts, Pillars and Bollards That Frame the Approach

Freestanding lights shape how people approach your home. A lamp post at the end of the walk, a pair of lights on gate pillars and a line of bollards along the drive all say "this way" long before anyone reaches the door. This group brings those three families together: post tops and lamp posts, pier mount pillar lights for masonry columns and fence posts, and bollards from low garden markers to tall driveway posts. Styles run from globe and glass lanterns with a traditional feel to square grids, marble look shades and slim modern cylinders.

Deciding Between Them

  • Post lights: Best for lighting a wide area from above, like the end of a front walk or a garden corner. Post caps also fit deck and fence posts.
  • Pillar lights: Sit on top of a column, pier or wall cap. They mark gates and entries and look best in matched pairs.
  • Bollards: Low, sturdy posts that line a path or drive and keep light close to the ground where feet and tires need it. Ours range from ankle height markers to posts taller than a person.
  • Power: Many designs here come in a choice of solar or hardwired within the same style, so you can match fixtures across wired and unwired parts of the yard.

Placement tip: Anchor the entrance first. Light the gate or driveway pillars, then fill in with bollards along the route to the door, and the whole approach will read as one plan.

Jump to pillar lights for gate columns, bollard lights for walks and drives, or post lights for lamp posts and post caps.

Common Questions About Outdoor Post Lights

For a front walk or garden, a post that puts the light at roughly 7 to 8 feet reads well and clears most heads. Taller posts suit driveways and larger properties, while shorter ones feel better in small front gardens. Consider the height of your porch and nearby trees so the post looks in proportion.

If you already have power at the post or plan to trench a cable, hardwired gives the most consistent light and should be connected by a licensed electrician. Solar is ideal for fence posts, garden corners and gates far from an outlet, provided the top of the post gets direct sun.

They do not need to be identical, but they should share a finish and color temperature. Black pillar lights with black wall sconces and the same warm white light make the whole facade feel coordinated.
